DUKES, Lawrence William

Dukes, a )O-vear-old black Navy veteran of World War II, was a
plumber's K&BBBE helper in Forrest City, Ark., where, on the evening
of May ea 191.7, he caught a ride in a taxi-cab operated by a 35-
year-old white woman, Mrs, frank Boyd. Harly the next morning, Mrs.
Boyd's Bemie nearly nude body was found on a lonely road near Forrest
City. Her cab was located near Dukes'!s stepson's home and he told
officers that Dukes had driven it there the preceding night, changed
clothes and left the bloodstained ones that he had been wearing be-
fore escaping into the woods, He was tracked by bloodhounds and
found hiding in the Wild River bottoms. His footprints matched
those found at the scene of the crime and he confessed that after he
had asked Mrs, Boyd to drive him out on the lonely road he had
Stabbed her below the left ear and then, as she was dying, dragged
her from the cab and raped her before driving the cab to the loca-
tion where it was found the next day. Speedily tried,convicted and
sentenced to death, he was electrocuted at the Arkansas State Prison
