Gilmore, a 3l-year-old black man, resided at 686 Henley, Memphis,
Tenn. During the summer of 1939, he committed several robberies
in rural Shelby County and raped two black women, In August of
that year, he accosted a young white couple who were parked in
"Ghost Grove! off Haynes Avenue in Memphis and, after robbing the
man of $10 and his watch, forced him to remove his pants, He took
these with him, to prevent the man from following or fleeing for
help and forced thr woman to accompany him down a railroad track
to a spot where he raped her, After wards, he returned the man's
pants to her and told her to take them to him, Around 1:15 on the
night of April 17, 190, a 25-year-old married white wom ang and
her neohew were going to pick up her husband when their car stalled
at the intersection of Huguenot St. and the I, C, Railroad. Gil-
more approached them carrying a wrench which he pretended was a
pistol and forced then from the ¢ar. The‘man offered him $2.00, the
