BRIGGS, Gray December 5, 1791

"The prince of horse thieves was Gray Briggs. The follow-
ine account of his execution is found in a Charleston (SC)
paper of Dec. 13, 179i: 'On Friday, Dece 5th, 1794, was
executed at Camden, pursuant to his sentence, Gray Briggs,
the noted horse thief. He died as he lived, a hardened
wretch, for before he was turned off, he addressed him-
self to the surrounding spectators and told them he dared
say that if a number of them had their dues, they deserved
the punishment about to be inflicted on him,'" HISTORIC
