"A New York slave, convicted of killing another slave
in 1696 was sentenced & 'to be hanged by the neck till
he shall be dead, and to but with a knife in his throat
and after to be hanged in a chain for the example of
others.'" (Special Court of Kingston, Jan. 73 8, 1695/96

Oyer & Terminer in Ulster County. Letter
dated 5-10-1985 from Dani Hearn. --
