Dilda, a white native of Georgia, was forced to leave that.state. with
his wife and two children after he had murdered a black man -for,money,
He went to Texas and remained there until he killed a white man was. ..

a ranch outside of Prescott, he killed at least three other men inclu-
ding his wife's brother. On Dec. 12, 1885, he shot and killed an el-
derly man named Jenkins who had ° worked on the ranch for a number of
years. He buried the body a few yards from the ranch house, Shortly
afterwards, the owner of the ranch arrived to find some cattle and
personal belangings missing and went to Prescott where he swore out
a warrant for Dilda, On the night of Dec. 20, 1885, Bey Sheriff
de ’, Murphy arrived at the ranch to serve the warrant and take Dilda
into custody. Mrs, Dilda told Murphy that her husband was not at
home and as the officer turned to leave, Dilda who feared that the
deputy had come to investigate Jenkins! disappearance shot him from
ambush and killed him. He’ buried Murphy's body undernsat th the floor
