fact that she refused to see a‘ doctor during her ilitness, but there
was little sympathy for Rev. Harden who most people felt had killed
his wife and he was convicted and sentenced to die. His execution
was delayed by unsuccessful appeals and when it beaame evident that

tered the poison in some apples, He was hanged at Belvidere on July
5, 1869, A large exx-crowd of people from Northern New Jersey and
Pennsylvania gathered in Belvidere to witness the execution and spe-

Harden, a white man, was born near Blairstown, N. Jey on May 11,
1837, the son of a well-to-do farmer, He received a good education
and in 1856 was licensed to preach in the Methodist Chercha and re-
ceived as his charge the the Mount Lebanon Methodist Churth in Hun-~
terdon Co. Harden boarded with a family living in Anderson, Warren
County, which was near his church, Mr. and Mrs, Samuel Dorland, for-
merly of Blairswowngwho had known him when te was a child, were among
the members of his church and they immediately began pushing a match
between him and their daughter, Hannah Lovisa, The young couple were
intimate on at least one occasion and the girl told her parents who
began pushing the marriage, Harden was willing to marry the girl,
but he wanted to wat until his income had increased to the extent
that he, could Support her, but he finally gave in to. the promptings
of the Dorlands and they wére’ married in November, 1858, Hannah, how-
éver refused to join her husband at the place where he was boarding
until March, 1859, Shortly after she arrived in Anderson she beeame
Sick and she died in agony on March 9, 1859, An autopsy revealed that
She had been poisoned with arsenic BRXXEXKXEK and the young husband
