Cressinger, a 19-year-old white man, lived on his father's farm at
Doyle Run, Lower Augusta Township, Northumberland Co., Pa. He was
in love with 16-year-old Daisy Smith, the daughter of a neighboring
farmer, who also showed an interest in some of the other boys in
the neighborhood. On August 10, 1898, he was out hunting rabbits
when he met Miss Smith who was gathering herbs. An argument ensued
over her attentions to other men and Cressinger's jealousy, and
when she started home, Cressinger shot her in the back and then cut
her throat from ear-to-ear. Convicted and sentenced to death, he
met his fate calmly when he was hanged on Jamary 3, 1900, at Sun-
