Jacob Sharkey, colored, was hanged for a felonious assault
committed upon Grace Clark, a white girl ll-years-old,
near Newcastle, on Sunday, September 28, 1890, Reeves
who was employed by the little girl's father, decoyed his
victim into a barn and so maltreated her that for several
days her condition was critical, Reeves mounted the
gallows without hesitation and called for Dr. J. Jd. Blacky
who has been his medical attendant, and after bidding him
goodbye sent several farewell messages to Mr, and Mrs,
Clark and others. Death ensued in seventeen minutes, the
victim's neck being dislocated, Thirty people witnessed
the execution which was conducted withou t any hitch,"
