" AVEQUE, Adrian

Aveque, a 20year-old, mulatto, described as being “tall and robust
in stature," was a resident of New Orleans, Pa. wh ere, onthe night
of Feb, 6, 1876, he and his half-brother, Godein, attended a dance

in a hall located on the corner of Claiborne and Ursiline Streets,
Aveque, who had been drinking, got into an argument with another
black man, Richard Turner, ahd he drew a pistol and shot and killed
Turner who was unarmed, Aveque and Godcin fled New Orelans together
but both were captured the next day at Baton Rouge and returned for
trial with Aveque being charged with the murder and Godcin with being
an accessory, Both were convicted and sentenced to die and the con-
victions were affirmed on appeal but the Governor commutbd Godcin's
sentence to two-years' imprisonment, After his conviction, Aveque
spent most of histime reading the Bible and in religious meditations,
On the morning of his execution, his mother and Godcin were allowed to
visit him in his cell for a few minutes and he remarked to Godcin that
he would die bravely and as a Christina, This he did and he was by

far the more composed of the two other men executed with him from the
same scaffold which was erected on the northern wall of the court

yard in the Parish Prison Jail at New Orleans on June 15, 1877. His’
