HART, Charles

Hart, an 18-year-old illiterate white youth, worked as a farm laborer
and at odd jobs in Paulding, Ohio. On Sunday morning, Nov. 1, 189,

he enticed9-year-old Ashley Good and his 7-year-old sister, Elsie, into
a wooded area, After binding Ashley, hands behind his back, to a tree,
he attempted to rape Elsie, He then bludgeoned both children to death
with a stick of wood, cut their throats, disemboweled them and attemt-
ed to destroy evidence of the crime by placing their bodies on a pile
of brush and burning them, The charred remains were found later that
day and Hart was taken into custody on suspicion, He promptly con-
fessed and he was taken to the Defiance County Jail to await his

trial because of the intensity of the feeling against him in Paulding
County. His conviction and the sentence of death were not appealed
and their was no Gubernatorial intervention , On April 12, 1895, he wa
hanged at the Ohio State Prison, He went to his death quaking and
trembling with fear, protesting his innocence and begging God for
forgiveness.
