According to Atlanta, Ga., JOURNAL of 12-1)-190), Tom
Butler, black, convicted of wife murder in Copiah Co.,
Mississippi, and sentenced to hang. Convicted largely

on testimony of 15-year-old son who stated Butler had
tied his mother and whipped her unmercifully about noon
and that she was unable to work in the field the balance
of the day. About night the husband went home and find-
ing the woman sitting in front of th e fire groaning,
tied her hands behind her and marched her off through the
fields gar to the woods a few miles away. He returned
about midnight with the woman on his shoulder, dumped her
on the floor, and in a few mintues she was dead, The
physician who examined her the next day for the coroner
testified that her body was simply beaten and pounded in=
to a jelly, the switches used on her having been more
