"Joseph Bettys (Pettys), a hative of Ballston, Saratoga Co,
Ne Ye, where his father ran an inn, first served in the
American forces during the Revolution but after the Sarato-
ga campaign of 1777, felt he was not properly treated (be-=
ing reduced from sergeant to private for striking an offi-
cer), he started spying for the British in Canada, He was
captured by the Americans near West Point, tried and cone
demned to be hanged as a spy but upon the intercession of
his aged parents was pardoned by General Washington, Betty
returned to Ballston where he immediately began leading
raiding expeditions from Canada against his former neigh~
bors in the Saratoga District and especially in Ballston
