Spkener, a lO-year-old white man, had served time in both Arkansas
and Mississippi for grand larceny. In 1928, he killed a girl in
Temessee who had resisted his advances and served 1) vears in the
Tennessee State Prison, After his release, he repeatedly tried to
date 27-year-old Jewel Roberts, a waitress, but she reflused to go
out with him. In June, 19,2, he lured her to a Memphis hotel room
on the pretext of meeting some friends and when she resisted his
advances, he strangled her to death, stole three rings off her fin-
gers and the money from her purse, and left. The body was discovered
and identified the next day. Spigner wrapped the rings and gave them
to his girl friend who was also a friend of Miss Roberts! to hold for
hime She opened the package and when she saw the rings, she went to
the police and Spigner was arrested and charged with the crime. He
confessed and after having been found guilty and sentenced to death,
he was electrocuted at the Tennessee State Prison on July 15, 1913.
