where he served in the Army. By trade both a shoemaker and a baker,
he emigrated to the United States from La Havre in 18)B, Landing in
New Orleanse. He lived both in Memphis, Tenne, and in St. Louis, Mo,,
before going to Philadelphia in 183 and obtaining work as a cobbler,
A few weeks after his arrival there, he was arrested and charged with
the robbery of Zion Church, Following his conviction, he was sen-
tenced to serve four years in the astern State Penitentiary and he
swore at the time that he would have his revenge on those who had
testified against him after his release, In 188, Mrs, Catharine
Rademacher who had lived in the same house as he and who had testi-
fied at histrial was killed by having her throat cut as she lay
asleep in bed. There was circumstantial evidence linking Langfeld
to the crime and he was arrested and charged with the murder. He
maintained his innocence at the time of his arrest, throughout his
trial and up until the time of his execution, but he was convicted
and sentenced to die, There was no appeal and he was hanged in the
yard of the jail at Philadelphia on October 20, 188, Curious per-
