HOWARD, Washington and OGDEN, Charles T.

Howard and Ogden were white neighbors and close friends who lived in
Gloucester Co., N, J. In April, 186), Mrs, Ogden ran away from home
with a man named Zadoc Damrell, When K# Ogden found her missing, he
suspected what had happened and summoned his friend Howard to help
him track the fleeing lovers. The overtook Mrs. Ugden and Damrell nea
Shiloh in Comberland County and Howard held Damrell while Ogden
stabbed him repeatedly with a knife, inflicting wounds from which
Damrell died shortly afterwards, Both men were indicted, tried, con-
victed and sentenced to hang for the brutal murder and when the
Governor refused to commute the sentence, they were hanged from the
same scaffold in the jail yard at Bridgeton on July 20, 186), Ogden
maintained his composure to the end, but Howard broke completely on
the scaffold, crying and begging the Sheriff to knock him in the
head, cut his throat or kill him in any other manner, Ogden's last
words, cut off by the fall of the trap, were: "Die like a man,
