Powell, a black man, lived in an area outside of Edna, Jackson Co,,
Texa, that was populated almostexclustvely by blakk people when, in
September, 1988, a white family named Condit, consisting of the father
and mother, J, F, and Lora Condit, and five children, L2-yearsold Mil-
dred, lO-year-old Herschell, 6-year-old Jesse, 3-year-old Joseph and
10-month-old Lloyd, rented a farm and moved there, On one occasion,
Mildred reported that Powell had made an indecent proposal to her and
he implied to a number of blacks that he wanted to have intercourse
with the little girl, On the morning of Sept, 28, 1905, he told
several biack neighbers that he had "gotten what he wanted" and that
he and Monk Gibson, a 16-year-old black youth employed by Condit, had
killed the family, Around noon, Gibson reported that he had seen two
men chasing the fathhly and when the premises were inspected, it was
found that Mrs, Condit and the four oldest children had all been
bludgeoned and stabbed to death and that Mildred had been raped, (CGib-
son, whose clothes were covered with bhood, was arrested and when his
stories proved contradictory, he was charged with the crime, Powell's

hand was found to be identical with a_ bloody print found at the house
and it was learned that he had some bloody clothing washed on the

morning of the crime and he also was arrested and charged, The two
