Semione, a:36-year-old white man, lived at 91 Dante Place, Buffalo,
Ne Y. Late on the evening of August 26, 1920, he and two other men,
Joseph DePaulo and Luigi Campagna, left Campagna's residence, also
located on Dante Place, to go for a walk, Around eleven o'clock, two
policemen, standing on-a nearby bridge, observed two men AHXEX knock
a third to the ground and repeatedly drop a 25 pound concrete stone
on his head at a spot on Carroll Street near Louisiana Street. ‘then
they arrived, Campagna lay dead, his head smashed to a pulp, and both
Semione and DePaulo, who were covered with bhood and had Campagna's
purse containing $j0 in their possession, were taken into custody,

_ While robbery was considered one motive, it was believed that there
was a deeper one because of the savagery of the attack and it was ru-
mored, though never werfified, that Semione had been the injured party
in a love triangle in which Campagna was the successful rival, Both
men told and maintained separate stores, with DePaulo claiming that
Semione alone had murdered Campagna and Semione claiming that the
three of them had been attacked by four stzangers while they were
walking and Campagna killed. Both were convicted at separate trials

and the State Court of Appeals affirmed Semione's conviction while it
reversed that of DePaulo, At a subsecuent retrial, DePaulo pleaded

guilty to second degree HHRHE murder and was sentenced to life impris-
