"Columbia, S. C.y l-2)-1891-wWaite S, Martin, colored, was
hanged today in the jail yard for murdering in January
last, Alice McLeod, a white woman with whom he had been
living, ‘artin made a speech from the gallows, saying
that he did not intend to kill the woman and that he felt
sure of going to heaven, The drop fell at 11:12, but the
knot slipped and his neck was not broken and death ensuxed
from strangulation, At 11:22 he was pronounced dead and
the body was cut down and placed in a coffin. The execu-
tion was witnessed only by the authorized number of per-=
