clock, William Hayward (who was some months since con-
demned to death for highway robbery) paid the forfeit of
his life on the gallows, The awful ceremony was witnessed
by several hundred spectators, The unhappy culprit died
declaring his innocence of the crime for which he was
condemned; stated that he had been guilty of gaming and
other immoral practicess appeared truly penitent and re-
