WEATHERFORD (Parker Co.) TEXAS HANGINGS: : :
"In 1861, four Negro men were hanged, one right after
the other, from a wooden frame over the well situated
‘on the courthouse square. They were found guilty of
Bhievery and molestation and were roundaéd up by a posse,
The first legal execution was in 1869, A Negro named
Joe Williams was hanged for murdering a paddler. Quot-
ing H. Smythe in his historical sketch of Parker County :
‘For lack of a better conveyance, a farm wagon Was pre~
ssed into service, to which was hitched a mule and a
gray horse. The Negro was placed atop his own coffin,
beside the Sheriff, and they drove to the place of exe~-
cution, followed by a long procession of curious men and
