George, agblack man, was agpreacher in al Carroll Parish, Lae, who,
by his ability to go into trances and seg visions, had developed a
large following among the blacks in that Parish who turned to him for
advice and help in temporal asp well as spiritual matters, In May,

_ 1882, he went to Vicksburg, Miss., to collect a claim in the amount
of 90 for one of his followers. When he returned home, he put the
money in a trunk and told the man that he had been robbed while on
xhis way home, The man told him that he did not believe that story
and George compromised with him by giving him $20 in cash and his
note for the balance, When he next looked into his trunk he found
that the money was gone and he at first accused his wife of having
taken it. She was able to convince him of her innocence and told

him that the only other person to have been in the house was Peggy
Johnson, the leader of the females among his followers who aslo
served as his mistress. Miss Johnson moved from the neighborhood and
when she afterwards sought to avoid meeting him, he became convinced
that she was the thief. Finally he confronted her and, after first
denying that she had taken the money, she finally agreed to return it
to him. At subsequent meetings, she delayed giving him the money
and finally he shot and killed her, George fled to Arkansas and from
there to Texas where he was finally arrested in January, 1885, and
