MATHIS, Allen KY#+RB&ME

Hanged, Mayfield, Kye, on July 31, 1906. Black. Had
raped Mrs, sthel McClain on fight of 7/25/1906. Tried on
7/31 and hanged at 8:00 o'clock that night, 15 mimtes
after sentenced to die. 10,000 persons on hand though
only a few hundred could see actual execution even though
the fence that had been erected had been torn down by the
enraged mobxwhile the trial was in progress. It was only
fifty minutes from time the jury was swern in until Mathis
was pronounced dead. Mathis pleaded guilty. Hdd been
kept in Louisville jail and when returned by train was
guarded by military company from Hopkinsville and local
militia. Nonetheless several attempts were made to seize
him and on two occasions he was in the hands of the mob
while being taken to court house.
