Perez, a 35-year-old. New Yorker, had.a lengthy record, °
_ having. previously been in’ prison for rape. On March 30 a |
1948, he was on parole for impersonation of a federal
officer when he broke into the apartment of 36=year=old _
_ Mrs. Vera Lotito, owner of a New York travel agency, and
commenced ransacking it, packing clothes and-other valu-
ables in suitcases. Mrs. Lotito entered and screamed,
Perez stabbed her 15 times with a screwdriver and stran-_
-_gled_her to death, He was arrksted when_he- attempted to—
pawn a racoon coat which he had stolen fram the apartment
_ Efforts of the police to get Perez to confass were futile
until they allowed him to talk with his 1)-year-old
