HLLIS, James

Hillis, a 2 8-year-old white veteran of the spanish-American War, was
& miner in the Alpine mines, Pulaski Co., Ky. He and an elderly
crippled man, Fount Helton, also ran an illicit still and moonshined
whiskey. in July, 1911, they were arrested at their still and taken
to Burnside where they were tried before Wlagistrage A, J. Beattie,
convicted and received a heavy fine which they paid, Later that
day they returned to Burnside armed and shot and killed both Beattie
and Constable We F. Heath, Both men were arrested and charged with
the murders, Ellis was tried first, convicted and sentenced to die,
Helton was also convicted, but he received a 9-year sentence of
which he served ten years, t&llis was electrocuted at the Kentucky
