FERG GUSON, Cham

Ferguson, a native of Tennessee, served for a while in the regular
Confederate Army but then formed his own guerilla band which opera-
ted mainly in Kentucky and Tennessee. The band in general and Fergu-
son in particular were eccused of numbrous acts of brigandage. Ter-
guson was believed to have been responsible for the kill ing of at
least 2 2men including a Lieutenant Smith who was slian while wound-
ed in the Emory General Hospital in Virginia. Apter the war, Fergu-
son refused to avail himself of the Amnesty Proclamation and surrender
and he was captured near Alexandria, Tenn., on May 2), 1865.  Con-
victed by a military court in a trial that lasted from July 11 to
Septe 18, 1865, he was sentenced to hang, He was hanged at Nashville
on Oct. 2)", 1665, Merguson met his death calmly and his last words
were a request that his body be returned to his home and buried
