MILLER, James Large card.

"There was just one legal hanging here = Bent County at
that time covered nearly all of South Eastern Colorado,
The hanging was Feb. 2, 1877. The culprit was James
Miller - a mulatto soldier of Fort Lyon. He had killed
a bar keeper, John Sutherland - the night of Aug. 26,
1876. Before he was hanged he married a colored woman
of the Fort. Also was confirmed by Bishop Spalding of
Denver (I believe Episcopalian.) Sheriff Spiers did the
hanging at 2 pm - before a large crowd - even ladies,"

Letter dated 12-1-1676 from Mrs, LeRoy Bogtd, 906 Fifth St,
