Layes, a 33-year-old white native of Seranton, Ark., had been working
in Fort Worth, Tex, On Jan. 21, 1937, he hitched a ride from Fort
Worth with 35-year-old Martin Salazar, a Donna, Tex., truck farmer
who had sold a load of produce in Fort Worth, Salazar was accompanied
by two friends, AM6¥RZXS Antonio and Santiago Rodrigquez, and the four
men shared the cab of the truck until it was near Buda, Tex., and
Layes requested that they stop in order that he might answer a call

of nature. He stepped behind a tree and when he returned to the
truck, he drew a revolver and shot Salazar as he was lighting a ciga-
rette. The Rodriguez brothers ran and Layes fired at them but missed.
He then robbed Salazar's corpse of over $),0 and walked into townx to
AKSXSKSEAEEX police headquarters. The Rodriguez brothers had already
reported the incident and Layes stated that he had drawn the revolver
and killed in self-defense after the three Mexicans had attempted to
rob hime Salazar's money was found in Layves' possession and his
rifled wallett was found on the ground where Layes had thrown it.

Convicted and sentenced to death, Layes was electrocuted at the +exas

is saved and I am unafraid,"
