"Aiken, S. C., March 16, 1877~On 068. 2, 1876, two quiet
Germans, Houseman and Partmann, living four miles from
this place, were murdered, the house robbed, set on fire
and burned to ashes with the bodies, Suspicion attached
to five negroes, Nelson brow, Lucius Thomas, Adam Jokn-
ston, John Henry Deffis and Stephen Anderson, woes
who Were arrested and proofs accumulated that they were thd
right parties, and they finally made a confession. They
also confessed to the burning of a Baptist church at Aiken
murdering a white man named Levin and other crimes. On
Jan. 5 they were tried by a jury composed of twelve negroes
convicted and sentenced to be hung on the 16th of March,
Yesterday Gov. Hampton respited Anderson for thirty days,
