Williams, a white planter, lived near Montgomery, Alabama, On Jan,
1, 1829, he went to the Montgomery Count y Court House to attend the
annual hiring of slaves. As he was entering the door the Court House,
Silas Goree, a constable, sought to serve a write on him for debt
and Willaams drewa knife and stabbed him trhough the heart, killing |
him instantly, He was granted a change of venue to Autauga County |
where he was convicted and sentenced to die, but his case was appealed
to theAlabama Supreme Court which reversed and remanded the sentence,
ordering a newtrial, on the grounds that there were irregularities in
the transfer of the indictment from Montgomery to Autauga County, He.
was tried a scond time, convicted and on January 2f, 1832, he was
hanged in Montgomery,
