Young, a black man born free in Missouri in 1855, was fairly literate
and had lived a roving life having worked as a deckhand on ships on
the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico, as a longshoreman on
the Wharves in Galveston, Texe, and traveled with a circus for two
years, In 1883 he began a relationship with a 30-year-old woman
named Fannie and they moved to Palmer, HLlis Co., where they lived as
man and wife. Early in 1885 thegr relationship began deterioating and
they quarreled frequently with him threatening to kill her on several
occasions, On the night of April 5, he #XRK left the house with a
sack, saying that he was going for coal, He removed his shoes and
slipped back to hhe house in his stocking feet and shot and killed
her through a kitchen window. The ground was wet and as he fled, he
sost the stockings and these helped to identify him as the killer,
He said that he would not be taken alive and managed to evade capture
for some time even though he was hunted by posses and Bihooodhounds,
Finally he was spotted hiding in some bushes By a marshal and when
he refused to surrender and sought to run, he was shot and seriously
wounded, His trial and the sentenceof death were affirmed by the
Appealate Court and on May 8, 1886, he became the first man in Ellis
County to be legally hanged. The gallows were constructed on a vacant
