"Jackson, Miss. Septe 2h, 1907-When Sheriff Spann yesterday entered
the jail to read the death warrant to Dan Samuels, who is to be hanged
at noon today for the mrder of Robert Berryhill near Raymond on July
4, 1907,xSamuels stated that he is ready to die, having made peace with
his Maker, but he is innopent of the crime for which he is to hang, Hig
former confessions of guilt, in most of which he has implicated another
negro, Isaiah Odom, he says were prompted by an insane fear, He now
repudiates all these confessions, Berryhill was a young white man and
had started across country to Dulaney's Lake, a distance of several
miles, to apicnic, early in the morning, stopping at Samuels! house to
buy some whiskey, Having procured the whiskey he drank so much of it
before resuming his journey that he became under the influence of it
and seems to have stayed several hours at Samuels! house, He had a few
dollars in small change in his pocket, which in a spirit of bragadocio
he is said to have rattled in the presence of the two negroes, Samuels
and Odom, They theory is that this aroused in the negroes a greed for
the money of which they probably thought there was a great deal more thg
there really was and that they followed him to the woods nearby, pulled,
him off his horse and choked him to death, leaving him in the woods
with his horse hitched to a tree nearby, late the same afternoon
Samuels reported to some neighbors the finding of the body and the
horse, and assisted in putting the body in the wagon when it came time
