MARTIN, James

Martin, a white man whenever revealed his-real name; saying -that he
had a father and sister living who he did not wish to disgrace, was
in Silver Bow Junction, Montana, on the evening of May 19, 1902, He
and-a companions Charles Lennox, met—a-raitread- £trenan-nemed—dohn ia
Williams who was waiting to catch a train for Anaconda in a saloon,
When Williams flashed a considerable sum of money, Martin and Lennox
decided to rob him, They followed the fireman to the train depot and
when Williams resisted their attempt ‘at robbery, they knocked him to
the ground and one of them - it was never proven which = shot him,
Williansdied the- following day-and-both Martin and Lennox; who had
fled without taking Willians' money, were arrestéd. Both were con-
victed and sentenced to hang, but while awaLting exe®ution they mana-
ged to escape from the Butte Jail with four other prisoners, Martin
was recaptured and returned to jail to await execution but Lennox was
never heard fron again, Martin was hanged in total darkness in the
