Estis, a white man, was a native of St, Clair Cosy Moes where he
had a wife and two children who he left wken he went to California
in the gold rush days, On August h, 185), he was living in rural
Humboldt Co, where he was having an affair with the wife of a man
named John Blaisdell, On that day, Blaisdell caught the two to-
gether and in the fight which followed, Estis killed Blaiddell,

He maintained that Mrs. Blaisdell had instigated the oudom affair
and the murder and he said that he did not mind dying if she would
suffer the death penalty also. Prior to his execution, he managed
to escape but was recaptured. Jt was suspected that the jailer who
had become friendly with Estis was involved in the escape, but Estis
made a statement in which he said that he had managed to get away
without any help from the Jailer or anyone else, He was hanged at
Union Town, nor Arcata, Humboldt Cosy on Nov, 25, 185. After the
black cap was lowered over his head,ke spoke his last words when

he requested that it be removed so that he could spit out his quid
of tobacco, :
