RANDALL, Bennie

Randall, a 25-year-old black man, was a resident of New Ulm, Colorado
County, Texas, A laborer, he went to work as a wood cutter on a farm
on Route Two in December, 1937, and lived in a cabin with a Mexican
boy, On the afternoon of Jan. 21, 1938, he and the Mexican left work
early because of rain and returned to their cabin, Around 6:30 that
night, the weather had cleared and they decided to go hunting. Around
8 o'clock, they arrived at the home of Mrs. Ida Smith, a 77-year-old
white widow, and the Mexican told Randall that MHEXXXXXHAXXKAKE she
lived alone, The Mexican agreed to stand watch outside while Randall
entered the house through a window and robbed it. After Randall had
| obtained entrance, he took some cake from the kitchen and passed a part
of it outside to the Mexican before searching the house, ‘When he en-
tered Mrs, Smith's bedroom, he stumbled over a rug and she was awakened
He forced her back onto the bed and, as she was a small and frail woman
succeeded in raping her over the slight resistance she was able to
