"The Superior Court for Rowan County, N. Oey commenced its
session on the 9th inst, (April 9, 1832), his honor, Judge
Strange presiding. 0, the llth the case of the S,ate ver-
sus Newton, D,niel der and Will (all slaves), Hae first
for burning the barn of Mr, Moses D, Kilpatrick, and the
other three for being accessories before the fact, was~ ta-=
ken up» The case was ably argued by the Solicitor General
and Messrs, Morehead and P.arson, for the S,ate, and by
Messrs, Caldwell and Nash for the defendants, The jury,
after retirmng for a few moments, returned into Court with
the following verdict: "We find Newton guilty of the arson
aw charged in the bill of indictment, and Daniel guilty of

being accessary before the fact of the said arson, and
Jack and Will not guilty..." Was subsequently sentenced to
