Jeffords, a white resident of Columbia, S. C., was a partner in the
ownership of a service station located at Elmwood and Main Streets
with John C, Arnette, When they had a business disagreement, Jeffords
offered to buy or sell his portion of the business'to Arnette but the
latter refused to come to terms. They owned a business life insurance
policy which would pay the sum of $1,000 to the survivor in case either
should die and Jeffords conspired with their two employees, Ira Harri-
son and Glenn Treece, to murder Arnette, Around eleven o'clock on the
night of May 9, 1922, they went to the station while Arnette was there
alone, using sticks and a tire tool, bludgeoned himto death, Jeffords
also strangled his partner as he lay dying, They then drove the body
in Arnette's automobile to the Bay Bridge on Kirkland Avenue and ran
it into a ditch in an effort to make it appear that he had been killed
in an accident after which they returned to the station and set if
afire, The blaze was extinguished before evidence of the murder was
destroyed and Harrison and Treece were both arrested before daybreak
on the morning of May 10th, They both made confessions in which they
named Jeffords as the instigator of the murder and he also was taken
into custody, He maintained that he had nothing to do with the mrder
