Reade, a 26-year-old Jamestown, Ne Y., taxi driver, was. the.product.
of a broken home and he and his three brothers were largely reared
by forster—parents. _His—police-record showed arrests dating back to
1946 and included charges of petit larceny, public drunkenass and __
resisting arrest. For a while he was an inmate at the Elmira Recep~
tion Center, an institution for delinquent childreng At Jamestown, in
1951, he was_a suspect in a morals case involving a young girl, but
he was released when no charges WAEXXSUKASX were filed, On the
evening of July 11, 1955, he went to the home of his brother, Francis
_Headek and played Monopoly with Francis and his wife Beverly until_it-
was time for Francis to go to his night shift factory job at nine
~o ‘clock. Joseph returned to his room where he got a bottle of cheap
w ine and then returned to Francis! apartment where he and Beverly
resumed their Monopoly game. After Joseph Reade got drunk off the
wine he made AXBASE an advance to his sister-in-law, and when she in-
dignantly resisted them, he knocked her—unconscious, took her into

the bedroom and raped her, Afterwards, he threw her body on the
floor and stood on her throat until she died fron suffocation. When
