here yesterday (3-20-1908), He paid the penalty for
criminally assaulting Victoria Holmes, aged 8, Nov. 29th
last. The negro had two preachers with him the whole of
Thursday and a part of Thursday night. A number of ne=-
groes were Singing and praying around the jail until late
dawn Friday. Mack had notiiing to say on the scaffold, but
showed stolid indifference to the penalty about to be in-
flicted upon him, At 1:13 the trap was sprung, causing
strangulation, He was pronounced dead in 19 minutes,"
