West, a black preacher living in Jakin, Ga., and his wife had a
quarrel in which he struck here She swore out a warrant charging
him with wife beating and when Jakin City Marbkal Henry Newberry
went to arrest him on the night of Auge 15, 1911, West and he
exchanged shots. West was struck once in the hand and received

a flesh wound in the thigh, but he shot Newberry with both barrels
of a double barreled shotgun, one charge striking the Marshal in
the body and the other in the head. West succeeded in escaping
into Florida and from there went to Charleston, S Ce, where he
was arrested in October. Returned to Georgia, he was tried,
convicted and sentenced to hange The execution was carried out
at Blakely, Ga., on Feb. 22, 1912. His neck was not broken by the
fall and it was 35 minutes before the attending physicians pro-
nounced him deade
