New York City, early on the morning of April , 1926, Patrolman
Charles Reilly saw the robbery and approached Heslin from behind
with a raized night-stick, Heslin turned befors. the pol iceman
reached him and fired both revolvers, killing the officer instantly.
In his haste to put his revolvers back in his pants pockets, Hes-
lin shotand seriously wounded himself in the leg. He fled to

the house of a friend a few blocks away and other officers, follow-
ing the trail of blood, arrested him there within six minutes of
the shooting, Heslin was lying in bed, clothed only in his under-
shirt. After roughing himgup,; the policemen threw him down two
flights of Stairs, beat and Kicked him and then dragged his un-
conscious form to a patrol car, When he reached the station and
regained conscLousness, he was beaten repeatedly for several hours
as well as being subjected to such torbhres as having cigarettas
