Thomas, & Revolutionary War-veteran, married-and- the father of six
children, was ina New Durham, N. He, tavern drinking with his. best
friend, Captain Peter Downe, one night in February, 1788. Thomas
got into-an-argument with -a-third- party and drew a knife, Downe
Sought to intervene just as Thomas struck with the knife and was ;
fatally wounded. Thomas expressed the deepest remorse at his impet-
uous act, but was none the less tried, convicted and sentenced to
die. While awaiting his execution, he attempted to escape from the
jail in Dover by climbing the chimney flue but was unsuccessful. He
was hanged XEXNEBEXE at the foot of- Swazey's H-LIL in Dover on June
3, 1788, Mrs, Thomas was allowed to spend his last night with him in
his cell and when she returned to New Durham she discovered tha ts
during her absence, her home had burned and that all but one of her
children had perished in the fire,
