MOLNAR, John
Molnar, a 22-year-old white native of Rakaeza, Hungary, emigrated to
the United States and settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where he renewed
his acquaintance with a man named Dahonish who he had known in Hun-
gary and who had preceded him to this country by several years, Da-
honish was a rival of John Gehring for a young woman who both were
courting and to whom Dahonish also owed a large sum of money, He
promised to pay Molnar some money and assured him of safe passage
back to Hungary if Molnar would kill Gehring. On the evening of
June 6, 189), Molnar lured Gehring into a wooded area and shot him
in the back without warning, inflicting a fatal wound, Both Molnar
and Dahonish were arrested and tried for the mrder, Both were con-
victed but while Dahonish received a life sentence, Molnar was sen-
tenced to die, Molnar accepted his sentence stoically though he did
express some bitterness over the fact that he was sentenced to die
while Dahonish who was the instigator of the murder had his life
sparede He was hanged at the Ohio State Prison on June 26, 1895,
