TARANOW, Daniel Peter

Taranow, a 23<year-old white Air Force veteran, was a native of New
York City where his father was a hardware merchant, On June 9, bolts
he was given a lift while hitch-hiking by Francis L, Devon, 23-yezrs~
old, on the Baltimore Pike near Swarthmore, Pae When Taranow drew
a pistol, and ordered Devon to pull to the side of the road, Devon
accelarated his speed and as,he was driving at 60=miles=-per-hour,

now was sane at the time of the crime and the judges sentenced him
to die, The case was appealed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on
the grounds that he should not have been sentenced to death because
