Grymkowski, a #5 -year-old resident of Cleveland, Ohio, and Matlovski,
a 33-year-old resident of New York City, were both white veterans of
World War I who had served in France, . While Matlovski had no prior
criminal record, that of Grymkowski was considered unsavory. On
Septe 19, 1923, they were in Palmerton, Carbon Cos, Pa., visiting
some friends of Matlovski. Both men drank heavily during their stay
in Palmerton and, on the night of Sept. 11, they encountered a butch-
er, James Heintzleman in the doprway of his Shop and, as Grykmkowski
held a pistol on him, Matlovski robbed him of over $200, his watch
and chain and his eyeglasses., They, were. pursued by a. posseeto a
wooded gulley just off the Towamensing Trail and Aquashichda where
they turned and gave fight. One of the possemen, Palmerton Constable
Elmer Anthony, a 52-year-old veteran policemen, @as shot through the
neck, the bullet severing his Spinal column and he died from his
wound on Sept. 17. Grymkowski and Matilovski were taken into custody
on the night of their crime after attempts to dynamite them out of
