‘The first execution of record (in Garrard Co., Kye) was
that of Phoebe, a woman of color, convicted by the county
court, and is found in County Court Order Book for the year
of 1808, Trial was as follows: 'Phoebe, woman. of color,
property of Wm. He Rainey tried and condemned for the mur-
der of an infant son of above named James Harvey Rainey ear-
ly in 1808 by a jury composed of the following names: Jobe
Johnston, James Fletcher, John Jones, Wm. Dunn, James Ald-
ridge, Those Buford, John Faulkner, Srey James Brassfield,
Samuel Gill, John Johnston, John Bryant and Wm, O'Bannion,
Sentence is that she be taken to a place of execution of
the Public Square in Lancaster, Kentucky and hung by the
neck until she is dead, dead, dead and God have mercy on
your soul,' Her value was fixed by the court as three
hundred dollars and ordered paid to her owner by the courte
