GARDINER, Cornelius, JAMES, Charles T,, and MYERS, John

Gardiner, a 23-year-old porter, James, a 2l-year~old waiter, and Myers,
a 19-year-old dentist's messenger, were all balck residents of Balti-
more, Md, On the afternoon of May 8, 1899, theyz separately entered

a house located at 653 Vine Street, where a 13-year-old black girl,
Anne Bailey, lived with her parents, Miss Bailey was alone at the
time and the three men forced her into submission and brutally raped
her, When her older sister returned home, AXXXXHMHRXERXKKK Myers and
Yames fled while Gardiner hid in the attic where he was subsequently
discovered covered with soot, James and Myers were captured shortly
afterwards and all three were charged with the assault which left Miss
Bailey unconscious and in convulsions for two weeks, So serious was
her condition that it was feared that she wuld die, However, she re-
covered in time for their trial on X#HXXX June 12 and her testimony
led to the conviction of all three and they were sentenced to be hang ed
There was no appeal and the Governor declined to intervene with execu-
tive clemency. On July 17, they made a complete confession in thich
they admitted the assault and said that they had perjured themselves
at their trial. They were hanged in the jail yard ab Baltimore on

July 28, 1899. Even though they trmmbled in fear as they went to the
gallows, they faced their deaths bravely and made no statements, When
