SHACKLEFORD, Claude Ee

Shackleford, a 3l-year-old white native of Pilot Mountain, N. C., was
a farmer who resided near High RAXNZ Point. He was convicted of
raping the 10-year-old daughter of a neighbor BRAXKESNESKRSAXERXAXE in
the Summer of 1919 and sentenced to die in North Yarolina's gas cham-
ber. Nine minutes before he was to be executed on June 30, 195, the
Governor grantéd a respite beca use a document, signed by both the
child and her mother, had been submitted claiming that they had given
