Taylor, a black farm laborer, lived in Hale Cosy Alay In Septem
ber, 1907, he raped the young daughter of Alfred Johnson, a re~
Spected white farmer who lived about four miles from Greensboro,

finally apprehended in Demopolis,: He was taken to the Jefferson
County Jail for ‘safekeeping until his trial when he was returned
to Greensboro and convicted. Taylor maintained that he was inno»
