OMITH, Herbert W,
Smith, a 32-year-old white native of Hancock, Ne Ye, lived in Bing=
hamton, Ne Ye, where he was arrested a number of times Bor burglary
and grand larceny. After his rlease from a three year prison sen-
tence at Auburn Prison for grand jarceny, he obtained a job at a
lumber camp at Walton. On the evening of Jan, 30, 1921, he was on
his way to visit a girl friend at Chenago Forks and passed through
Ninevah Junction, Chenaggo Co. He broke into the store-postoffice
operated by 42-year-old Lewis H. Johnson and was in the process of
burglarizing the place when Johnson and his (é=year~-old father arri-
ved, having been summoned by a burglar akarm, They placed handcuffs
and escaped, He was not arrested until Feb, 19, 1921, when a lady
in Binghamton nofified police there that Smith was in her house
laying cards, He was arrested and fonfessed at the Binghamton po-
ice Station, saying that KEXKEH after he fled Johnson's Store he had
made his way to a barn where he found a hack~saw and removed the hand:
