Layer, a 38-year-old Dayton, Ohio, white man, induced 13-year-old
Arthur Moore, a fifth grade student. and Boy Scout to accompany him
to a Bield near the Dayton Soldiers’ Home on May 19, 1922 , under
the pretext of giving him some rabbits. When the boy resisted his
sexual advances, Layer rappd him and then strangled him to death.
Young Moore, whose father operated a Dayton pool room, was not missed
until the next day because it was assumed by his parents that he
was spending the night with a cousin as he generally did on Friday
nights. When the cousin called the next day to inquire as to his
whereabouts, a search was started that resulted in the inoy's bocy
being found. There was evidence that he had put up a fight for his
knife and a small penknife that he carried was found open nearby.
Layer was not suspected for several weeks and after he was taken into
custody he confessed the crime, At his trial, he retracted his con-
fession and maintained his innocence from then until his execution.
He calmly went to his death in the eléctric chair on Nove 2, 192
